About the speaker
Dr. Cavit Agca has received his PhD from the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans in 2008. Dr. Agca has a long-term interest in visual systems and several aspects of associated molecular mechanisms.
For several years, he worked on evolutionary perspectives of vision under the supervision of Dr. William H. Klein in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Afterwards, he has worked under the supervision of Dr. Christian Grimm in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Zurich. His main focus was to identify the mechanisms related to endogenous neuroprotection in the retina. Dr. Agca also did a brief postdoc at Inselspital, Bern on retinal vein occlusion models.
In October 2014, Dr. Agca moved to Basel to work with Dr. Albert Neutzner at University Hospital Basel on a novel retinal gene therapy targeting the OPA1 gene in Autosomal Dominant Optic Atrophy (ADOA). Since September 2019, he had his group at Sabanci University working on several different aspects of neuroprotective gene therapies and retinal regeneration.
