Europa Media training in Lisbon marks a new milestone in capacity-building efforts under GEMSTONE’s Work Package 4.
As part of the GEMSTONE Project’s mission to boost Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University’s (ACU) research support capacity, two key members of the ACU team participated in the prestigious Horizon Europe Academy training programme held in Lisbon, Portugal between 24-28 March 2025. This initiative falls under Work Package 4, specifically Task 4.3, which focuses on mentoring and short-term visits for research support services staff.
ACU representatives at forefront of training
Cem Ozturk, GEMSTONE Project Manager, and Cansu Akin Levi, Business Development and Research Funds Specialist at ACU’s Technology Transfer Office, represented the university at this intensive, week-long training event organized by Europa Media. The academy is renowned for offering comprehensive and practical insights into navigating Horizon Europe – the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation.
While Ms. Akin Levi participated in Part II: Master of Project Management and Reporting in Horizon Europe (26-28 March), Mx. Ozturk completed the full course (24-28 March), which also included Part I: Master of Proposal Writing in Horizon Europe. The agenda covered a range of vital topics, including proposal development, impact maximization, exploitation and dissemination strategies, financial and technical reporting, and legal obligations under the Grant Agreement.

Enhancing skills for greater impact
Both participants praised the training for its practical focus, expert-led sessions, and the opportunity to network with professionals from across Europe. From proposal writing workshops and mock evaluations to financial reporting case studies, the course provided hands-on experience directly applicable to ACU’s evolving research management practices.
“The course was a deep dive into both the strategic and technical aspects of Horizon Europe,” said Mx. Ozturk. “It gave us the tools and confidence to better support ACU’s research community in securing and managing EU-funded projects.” Ms. Akin Levi added, “Attending this training was not only professionally enriching, but also inspiring. The practical exercises and real-life case studies helped us understand the nuances of project management and compliance under Horizon Europe.”
Knowledge sharing back at ACU
In alignment with GEMSTONE’s capacity-building goals, Mx. Ozturk and Ms. Akin Levi plan to organize a follow-up seminar to share their newly acquired knowledge with ACU researchers and support staff. The seminar will focus on effective grant writing, best practices in project reporting, and tips on maximizing impact – key components for successful Horizon Europe participation.
Their participation exemplifies GEMSTONE’s commitment to sustainable institutional growth through targeted training and mentoring interventions. These efforts aim not only to elevate ACU’s internal research support capabilities, but also to position the university as a strong and competitive player in the European Research Area.
