Ayca Aydemir Mazlumoglu, ACU’s Library Director, will represent the Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University in a key panel discussion, highlighting the transformative role of librarians in advancing research and innovation within health-themed universities. Through her work on the Horizon Europe-funded GEMSTONE Project, Aydemir Mazlumoglu will delve into critical topics such as electronic resource access and open data publication, underscoring the importance of effective research support in fostering scientific excellence and collaboration.

On January 11, 2025, Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University (ACU) will proudly participate in the Health Literacy Summit at Istanbul’s iconic Rami Library. The event, coinciding with the National Health Workers’ Day, will gather academics, librarians, healthcare professionals, and industry experts to discuss the theme “Access to Information for Healthcare Professionals.” Among the distinguished speakers is Ayca Aydemir Mazlumoglu, ACU’s Library Director, who will shed light on the vital role research support staff play in advancing research and innovation through EU-funded projects.

Aydemir Mazlumoglu’s talk, titled “From Research to Practice: The Role of Librarians in EU Projects in Health-Themed Universities,” will be featured in the second session during the panel “Projects and Research in Health Librarianship.” Drawing from her experience with the Horizon Europe-funded GEMSTONE Project, Aydemir Mazlumoglu will explore two critical dimensions of health information management: access to electronic resources and the storage and publication of research data through open access platforms.

GEMSTONE: A platform for excellence

The GEMSTONE Project, short for “Genetically engineering Experimental Models: enhancement of Scientific and Technological excellence and innOvation potential to study NEurodevelopmental diseases,” is a transformative initiative coordinated by ACU. By focusing on gene engineering technologies and neuroscience, GEMSTONE aims to position ACU at the forefront of global research on neurodevelopmental brain disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy. Collaborating with Lund University and ICONS, GEMSTONE emphasizes knowledge transfer, capacity building, and bilateral scientific exchanges to enhance ACU’s research and innovation potential.

An essential pillar of GEMSTONE is ensuring effective research support at ACU. This includes empowering the university’s Research Project Office and other research support services to guide scientists in grant applications, fund acquisition, and the communication and translation of research findings. The project’s commitment to open access and efficient data management underscores its alignment with global standards of research excellence.

Librarians’ contribution to GEMSTONE

As Library Director, Aydemir Mazlumoglu has been instrumental in supporting GEMSTONE’s mission. Her efforts focus on enabling seamless access to electronic resources and promoting open access publishing for research outputs, thereby fostering transparency and collaboration. In her speech, she will share insights on how librarians serve as indispensable partners in EU projects, ensuring that health-themed universities like ACU achieve their full research and innovation potential.

Health Literacy Summit

Organized with the theme of improving access to health information, the Health Literacy Summit provides a dynamic platform for dialogue and collaboration. Targeting a diverse audience, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical librarians, and digital health platform representatives, the summit aims to tackle pressing issues and explore innovative solutions for better healthcare information dissemination.

ACU’s active participation in this prestigious event highlights its commitment to advancing health literacy and promoting research excellence. Aydemir Mazlumoglu’s presentation will not only spotlight GEMSTONE’s achievements but also inspire dialogue on the evolving role of librarians in bridging the gap between research and practice.
